Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. As a child, Ruth Roman's carnival-barker father passed away, which made her mother Mary Pauline (Gold) to be cleaner or waitress so that they could be able to survive. Ruth was raised in a poor area of Boston Massachusetts where she attended high school. But she quit school after just two years in order to explore a career in acting. This was not an easy path to pursue. Even though she got a job as a hat check girl in New York posing as a still for a mystery magazine but no theater jobs came her way. Then, she worked as a hat check girl at an evening club, before deciding to call it quits and returning to Boston. In the New England Repertory Company was her first gig as an actor who was steady. Earned money doing shifts during the day, in the ushering department. She took classes in drama at the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
